October 2024: Home Again

Creative fidelity in relationships means more than a long-term commitment—it's a dynamic process of adaptability, understanding a person's past and present, and embracing personal changes as the relationship grows.

This evolving dynamic of creative faithfulness is at the heart of Do For One, helping people rediscover their identity and make bold decisions for the future, as seen in the story of Annette and her Advocate, Megan.

Annette gets a gift from Megan for her birthday

It was Annette’s birthday, August 7th, 2023.

Her Advocate, Megan, gifted her a copy of Where the Crawdads Sing. Though they had just met that summer, Annette felt compelled to share one of her biggest dreams with her that evening.

“My birthday wish is home.”

Annette said, “After 2 years of living in the nursing home, I started to forget about my sense of identity after a while. Since meeting Megan and getting outside again, I’ve been remembering who I am.”

Over the next year, Annette, Megan, and a supportive community made her wish come true as Annette returned to her Upper East Side home of over 50 years.

Megan was initially concerned that Annette’s desire to move back home might not be sustainable. However, they ultimately chose to take the risk, assisting with paperwork, legalities, organizing her belongings, and supporting her move back home.

“Even if I am to end up back at the nursing home someday, I’m gonna be known, I’m not gonna be lost in the system.”

Megan says,“The human desire to work towards something is a really wise thing to consider. I realized that we all take for granted the right to take risks in life so I gave it to God and trusted in Him to lead her situation.”

On August 7th, 2024, Annette celebrated her birthday for a second time with Megan, this time in her own home and neighborhood.
