Friendship, advocacy, and social change emerge when people's gifts are brought into community.

Get Involved

Step 1. Sign up for our monthly newsletter.

Step 2. Attend an in person Info Session (see below). This is our front door for everything else.

Step 3. At the event, you will have the opportunity to explore ways to get involved.

What follows is a thorough discernment process, including additional steps not mentioned here, as we consider your involvement together.

Note: We recognize that our next session is far away. Email info@doforone.org if you would like to get involved or get in touch with us sooner.

  • Advocates enter one person with a disability’s life to respond to that person's needs and interests through an authentic and freely given relationship. Advocates will choose, along with their Partner, the personal investments, contents, and direction of the relationship. A growing number of relationships will have lasted a long time. However, some will be arranged for a specific, short-term purpose. Advocates will often benefit from such engagements as much as the person with disabilities.

    Advocates can:

    • Share time with their Partner in activities and conversation

    • Help their Partner develop their talents and interests

    • Assist in achieving a goal their Partner may have

    • Bring their Partner into social, public, and community engagement

    • Provide a sense of safety and belonging through moral support

For those potentially interested in becoming an Advocate, please note that this year, our primary focus is recruiting people with disabilities living in MANHATTAN and WEST/CENTRAL QUEENS, and a small number in Brooklyn and the Bronx.

We welcome Advocates living anywhere in or near NYC to get involved, but please know that it is unlikely you will be matched with someone living outside of those areas.

Please note that not everyone who expresses interest in becoming an Advocate will automatically be matched. Attend our info session to learn more.

  • We host community gatherings every OTHER month on Saturday afternoons in Midtown East and occasionally on Roosevelt Island.

Our gatherings are an optional, but supportive environment for those who are matched into a 1:1 relationship to come together.

Our gatherings are also a welcoming space for new folks who would like to see our mission in action and consider becoming an Advocate over time.

Attend our info session to learn more and get plugged in!

  • Praying is a high priority among staff and leaders. We believe that this is the greatest form of advocacy. We respect the fact that not all in our community are people of faith which is why this is a special initiative for those who would like to pray and for those would like to try it out.

    Partners in prayer can:

    • Plead the cause of those in need to God

    • Attend Wednesday morning prayer on Zoom every OTHER Wednesday from 8:15-9:00AM. This year, we are praying through passages in the Bible and praying for each other.

    • Attend in person prayer gatherings twice a year

    • Email info@doforone.org to be added to our prayer group

Join us for our next Info Session: Building Relationships Across Barriers

Monday, March 23rd, 7PM - 9PM at 109 East 31st St.

Join us for our next orientation session (IN PERSON in Midtown East) where you'll hear stories of transformative relationships and learn about how you can get involved.

At the orientation session, you will gain a deeper understanding of the history and philosophy behind Do For One’s mission. You will hear stories about real Do For One relationships, and learn about a number of ways for you to support our mission and get involved. There will be extended time for Q+A and mingling at the end.

For those interested in becoming matched in a one-on-one supportive relationship with a person with a disability, please note that our primary focus is recruiting people with disabilities living in MANHATTAN and ASTORIA, QUEENS. We do occasionally venture outside those areas, but that is where our core community is located.

We welcome Advocates living anywhere to get involved, but please know that it is less likely that you will be able to be matched with someone living outside of those areas.

Our next orientation is on Monday, March 23rd, 2026 from 7PM-9PM in Midtown Manhattan at 109 East 31st Street. Reserve your free spot by registering through the Eventbrite link above!

Note: The info session is geared towards potential volunteers who do not have immediate plans to move out of the NYC area. If you are a person with a disability interested in learning more about our relationship building program, email info@doforone.org so we can set up a personal phone call with you.
