November Newsletter: The Go-Givers

The Go-Giver Campaign

In a world that celebrates go-getters and one-sided acts of charity, we are choosing a different path. We’re building a movement of go-givers—people who, through words and actions, create a “common unity for the common good,” to borrow the wise words of social activist and theologian Peter Maurin.

We’re excited to launch our Go-Giver Campaign! Will you consider helping us reach our goal of $50,000 by End Of Year?

Shannon & Karen

Last year, Shannon (Partner) was featured in the acclaimed documentary Fire Through Dry Grass. The film amplifies the voices of disabled artists living in a nursing home as they advocate for other nursing home residents facing systemic neglect during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the weeks leading up to the premiere, Shannon was hospitalized. Karen (Advocate) was a constant source of support, visiting Shannon regularly and praying fervently for her recovery. Then came what can only be described as a quintessential NYC miracle: Shannon was discharged from the hospital just in time to attend the film’s premiere alongside Karen.

The film went on to earn several prestigious awards.

Karen says, "I love that Shannon and I show up for one another during big life milestones, like the release of a documentary, going to her nonprofit's gala, preparing for my wedding, or running a marathon. I'm grateful that our friendship has evolved to support one another during the times it matters most."

Shannon says, “Me and Karen have been friends since I was introduced to Do For One, almost 5 years ago. We’ve grown really close. She’s been a big support to me, coming into the hospitals whenever I’m sick. So of course when I heard she was running the marathon, I had to come support her too, because she’s always supported me - and that’s what friends do - support each other.”
