December Newsletter: Going Up To Bat!

Jerry & Jay

This summer, these two Harlemites, Jerry and Jay accomplished a highly anticipated goal of going to a Mets game. Amid all the ups and downs, the baseball metaphor of "going up to bat" captures how Jay has been there for Jerry.

This summer, Jay and Jerry accomplished their goal of going to a Mets game together.

Jay says,

“Every player has a theme song when they walk to the plate. One of the players uses the song “My Girl” from the Temptations. Jerry and I would sing it every time that player went to bat.”

When Jay first met Jerry, he was living at his group home. The two connected over playing blackjack, listening to music, talking about sports, and enjoying local food.

Now, as Jerry is facing some housing transitions, he currently lives in a nursing home. Despite these changes, Jay has remained a constant, loyal presence in Jerry's life. He has continued offering Jerry the chance to get out of the building for a slice of pizza or a peaceful escape to the nearby park.

Jerry says,

"Jay has been a really great friend to me. He always makes sure I'm doing okay and I really appreciate that. He's been there for me every step of the way. I memorized his phone number just in case something happens to my phone. He checks in on me and I can count on him."

Jay continually offers Jerry the chance to get out of the nursing home.
