August 2024: Time Well Spent Part 2
In his book Friends, Robin Dunbar emphasizes that the tangible benefits of a few deep friendships far outweigh the numerous short-lived and often shallow social interactions.
He writes, "It is the sense of relaxedness that comes with spending time with friends that is important, as opposed to rushing madly around for a few minutes here and a few minutes there."
To illustrate this point, we have some stories to share, but first, we have some exciting news...
We’re thrilled to announce that Elaina Bals, featured in this newsletter (the second story), will be joining Do For One as our Associate Coordinator this fall and winter. Read below to learn more.
The Tree Groves
After 2 years of getting together in Allison’s home, Christie Ray was able to meet up with Allie in a new environment for the first time - in Allie’s favorite corner of Central Park.
Christie Ray says, “Allie and her aide have a daily routine of sitting in their favorite grove of trees in Central Park when the weather is nice, just to read or nap or chat. I got to stop by and soak up the beautiful weather with them. It was a delight to join in one of their normal rhythms!”
The Sanctuary
Despite living in Manhattan for over 30 years and being a lifelong lover of art and history, Oliver had never visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art until Elaina took him there. They enjoyed a couple of hours together, but Oliver was so captivated that he stayed until closing. “He kept going strong for hours.” Elaina said.
"I had never been there before!" Oliver says. "The Met has become like a sanctuary to me. I really like the "period rooms" with Art from the 17th and 18th century."
Oliver was thrilled to hear about Elaina joining our staff team, he said with excitement, "That's great!"
