January 2025: to the pillars of community

Often, what we call 'outreach' in the context of non-profit work remains just that—'out.' It keeps people at arm’s length rather than inviting those we care about to become genuine parts of our lives.

Freely-given relationships, however, shift this dynamic. They weave a new social fabric, drawing people into the very center of community life.

The result? Everyone discovers their purpose within the community, creating a unified and complete whole.

Here's to the musicians, the hosts, and the pillars of our community.

The Musicians

I hope to lead worship at a church someday,” Devon (pictured below to the right) shared with his best friend and Advocate, Ben, around the time they first met.

Last summer, Devon co-led a worship session at Ben’s church in Harlem.

Ben says, “People at my church seem to appreciate Devon’s keyboard playing as well as who he is as a person.”

Pictured here is Ben and Devon playing keys to a song called “Promises” by Maverick City Music.

The Hosts

Jenny’s family lives in China, so she cherishes being able to celebrate major holidays with Anjana, who lives nearby.

This year, the two friends got together for a Christmas meal, inviting many women from their church community, Jenny’s building, and Anjana’s family to join them.

I enjoy being the host of an event with Jenny. Not just participating, but being the host is what I like.

The Pillars of Community

Two January’s ago, Ivy entered the Hephzibah House for the first time and met Pennie, the Director.

Ivy heard that Pennie was hosting a weekly gathering where New Yorkers are invited to eat and listen to the Bible read out loud. There, Ivy discovered a warm, welcoming space where she is able to engage fully as someone who is blind.

Two years later, Pennie says that Ivy is the group’s longest running member!

It’s to the point where we’re like sisters and it’s like having a second family. Like I got two presents from her children, just because.
